I have been a fan of realistic first-person shooters for a long time, especially the ones requiring you to be on a squad with other people. The amount of strategy and communication needed between every member of a team is essential to being able to make your way to the goal and to be able to keep each other alive. It can make an entire team of strangers become friends in the span of a single round.
Developers Black Matter have recently been developing a game called Hell Let Loose, which is a FPS army simulator. The game is based on one of the biggest wars in history, World War II. The matches consist of massive 50 vs 50 battles on a 1:1 scale of a 4 kilometer map. You choose your equipment and what role you will be playing. You will receive unique equipment depending on what you choose that will help your team make it to the top. The map is divided into capture sectors. Your objective is to take as many of these sectors as possible from the enemy team and to keep your sectors safe.
There are three ways to play. You could take the Strategic route where you work with the other ground forces to help plan deployments of units, airstrikes, and supply drops. You can play as an Operator, where it is up to you to make sure that supply gets to your units who are fighting. You can plan the building of several useful environments like minefields and Garrisons. You are the defense. The Tactical players are the ones that setup locations for Watchtowers and the Garrison. You are equipped with a pair of binoculars that help you spot and can allow you to mark enemy troops, You have to work together with the Commander to gain the upper edge in battle.
The weapons and vehicles have all been changed from your typical FPS game. First off, you gun will have no cross hairs at all. You want to shoot someone accurately, you will have to aim down the sights like any real person. The guns have been made to be as realistic as possible, which means that you will have to be careful of overheating, the weapon kick, and weapon jamming. This makes it so you can’t just go gung-ho on anyone that you see. You actually have to take your time to aim and not just hold down the trigger if you want to be able to take them out and still be ready for anything that might come your way. Vehicles have been made very similarly, so you can’t just roll in with whatever metal box on wheels that you see. Each vehicle has a specific purpose to fulfill. All of these design decisions were made to make the game as realistic as possible.
You need communication, skill, and most importantly teamwork to be able to become the victor of each round. These types of games are great to bring a group of friends with you as you are already used to communicating with them and would have a general idea of everyone’s strengths. Also, who doesn’t enjoy playing a good game with a group of friends. Even just joining a random game with a bunch of strangers can become a good time and end with an exchange of friend requests. These sorta games can usually last up to 45 minutes to 2 hours of playing for a single round, so might as well do it with people that you like.
